How Can an Armor Up Yoga Series Guide Us into Freedom? It's an oxymoron, right?

Jul 01, 2026

I know, at first glance, it sounds like an oxymoron.

Armor... and freedom?

Isn't armor heavy? Restrictive? Meant for battle?

Shouldn't freedom feel like doing whatever we like and acting happy while we're doing it?

As it turns out, perhaps not.

Because before we can experience freedom, we first need to experience something our nervous systems long for...

Safety.

And sometimes, the very thing that makes us feel safe is the very thing that allows us to become free.

Safety Is the Foundation of Freedom, Trust is the Foundation of Relationship

Many people who have experienced trauma, chronic stress, grief, or overwhelming life circumstances spend much of their lives in survival mode. Their nervous systems become wonderfully adaptive, constantly scanning for danger—even when no danger is present.

When the brain perceives threat, it naturally prioritizes protection over curiosity, connection, creativity, joy, or growth. It is difficult to rest, trust, or move freely when every cell is asking, "Am I safe?"

Trauma-sensitive movement invites us to answer that question gently.

Not by forcing ourselves to "get over it."

Not by pretending everything is okay.

But by repeatedly experiencing moments where our bodies begin to whisper...

"Maybe... I'm okay right now."

Over time, those whispers become confidence.

Confidence becomes courage.

And courage begins to look a lot like freedom.

Practice Creates Safety

One of the beautiful gifts of repetitive practice is predictability.

Each week, we move through familiar postures, familiar rhythms, familiar passages, familiar breathing practices, and familiar opportunities to notice what is happening within us.

That consistency matters.

Our brains are constantly creating and strengthening neural pathways. Every time we practice slow breathing, gentle movement, grounding, gratitude, or truth, we reinforce pathways that help regulate our nervous systems.

Our muscles remember.

Our breath remembers.

Our minds begin remembering.

Eventually, what we practice in class begins showing up in everyday life.

Instead of immediately holding our breath when stress comes...

...we breathe.

Instead of immediately collapsing under anxiety...

...we ground.

Instead of automatically believing fearful thoughts...

...we pause and inspect our thoughts and feelings.

Instead of bracing against every storm...

...we stand firm in faith through it.

Not because life became easier.

Because we have practiced.

Freedom Lives in the Body, Too

Our bodies are remarkably designed, wonderfully creative, gifts.

Gentle, trauma-sensitive movement can help:

  • regulate the nervous system

  • reduce chronic stress hormones

  • improve breathing mechanics

  • activate the parasympathetic ("rest and restore") response

  • increase vagal tone and emotional regulation

  • improve balance, flexibility, and posture

  • release unnecessary muscular guarding

  • increase body awareness and trust

  • improve sleep and resilience

  • strengthen the connection between the brain and body

As our breathing deepens, oxygen delivery improves.

As our muscles soften, tension decreases.

As our posture opens, breathing becomes easier.

As we move mindfully, the brain continues strengthening healthy neural pathways through neuroplasticity.

Little by little...

Our bodies begin believing they are safe enough to move.

Safe enough to breathe.

Safe enough to rest.

Safe enough to hope again.

The Armor That Makes Us Free

The Armor of God described in Ephesians 6 is not merely defensive equipment.

It is a daily invitation to remember who God is...

Who we are...

And whose we are.

The Belt of Truth

Everything begins here.

Truth isn't merely information.

Truth is foundational to a secure relationship.

Truth is a Being.

When we continually remind ourselves that God is loving, kind, gracious, merciful, faithful, patient, and delightfully present, our view of Him begins changing.

As our understanding of Him changes...

Our understanding of ourselves changes too.

If He calls us beloved...

Perhaps we can stop believing we are unwanted.

And start believing we belong.

If He calls us forgiven...

Perhaps shame no longer gets the final word.

But the truth of grace does.

Truth gently untangles the lies trauma often teaches us.

The Breastplate of Righteousness

This breastplate protects our hearts.

Not by hardening them.

But by guarding them.

Hardened hearts often grow bitter, defensive, fearful, or ashamed.

Guarded hearts remain tender while wisely protected.

What fills our hearts eventually overflows through our words, relationships, and choices.

And here's the beautiful news:

Righteousness isn't something we achieve.

It is something Christ freely gives through our faith in Him.

That changes everything.

When we're no longer trying to earn God's approval—or everyone else's—we discover incredible freedom.

An audience of One is infinitely lighter than carrying the expectations of many.

Shoes of the Good News of Peace

Peace doesn't mean the absence of storms.

It means stability within them.

Like a deeply rooted tree stretching toward heaven while swaying with the wind, peace allows us to remain grounded without becoming rigid or breaking.

Trauma often teaches us to brace.

Jesus teaches us to stand.

Not because we're strong enough.

Because He stands with us.

And fights for us.

The Shield of Faith

Faith doesn't eliminate difficulty.

It allows us to keep moving through it.

The shield blocks the fiery arrows that fear, shame, condemnation, comparison, and discouragement continually send our way.

It reminds us that even while under attack...

We are not unprotected.

And we never walk alone.

When we journey together in community—encouraging one another, praying for one another, bearing one another's burdens—we become like shields linked together.

There is tremendous freedom in knowing you are covered.

Step by step...

We keep moving forward.

The Helmet of Salvation

Perhaps this is one of the greatest freedoms of all.

Nothing anyone says...

Nothing anyone does...

Nothing anyone believes about you...

Can remove what Christ has already secured.

You are His.

Your identity is settled.

Your future is secure.

Your worth has already been determined.

The helmet protects our minds from lies that constantly compete for our attention.

When shame whispers...

Truth answers.

When fear shouts...

Grace speaks louder.

From Genesis to Revelation, God consistently reveals His heart toward His children.

Chosen.

Loved.

Forgiven.

Redeemed.

Delighted in.

Worth pursuing.

Worth rescuing.

Worth dying for.

Worth rising again for.

He is for you.

Not against you.

The Sword of the Spirit

Interestingly...

The only offensive weapon is God's Word.

Not our opinions.

Not our arguments.

Not our performance.

His Word slices through deception.

It separates truth from lies.

It reminds us who God is.

Who we are.

And invites us to believe what has always been true.

Loved.

Accepted.

Secure.

Saved.

Sealed.

Delivered.

Being healed.

Freedom Grows in Creation

Have you ever noticed the trees?

You cannot see the wind.

Yet you see the branches sway.

You hear the leaves applauding.

Creation continually reminds us that unseen things are often the most powerful.

Faith is much the same.

Healing is much the same.

Perhaps you cannot yet see everything changing within you.

But little by little...

The leaves are moving.

Your breath is deepening.

Your shoulders are softening.

Your heart is opening.

Your steps are becoming steadier.

Your mind is becoming quieter.

You are healing.

Not because of perfect yoga postures.

Not because of flawless faith.

But because healing naturally happens in the presence of the Healer.

Jehovah Rapha.

The Great Physician.

The Creator who knit every cell together and continues restoring what has been broken.

Let Freedom Ring

Maybe that's why we armor up.

Not to become fearful.

But to become braver.

Not to hide.

But to stand.

Not to stay stuck.

But to move forward with courage.

Protected.

Grounded.

Loved.

Empowered.

Free.

So as we gather each week to breathe, move, pray, reflect, laugh, and journey together, perhaps we are doing far more than practicing yoga.

Perhaps we are rehearsing freedom.

And I can almost imagine our Father smiling over His children and declaring,

"Let freedom ring."

And with grateful hearts, we answer,

"Hallelujah. Amen."
